Hyperdontia is a dental condition where a person develops extra teeth beyond the normal set of primary or permanent teeth. These additional teeth, known as supernumerary teeth, can appear anywhere in the mouth and may cause alignment issues, crowding, or discomfort.
The exact cause of hyperdontia is not always easy to determine, although it mostly involves a strong genetic component. It can also be secondary to certain medical conditions, such as cleidocranial dysplasia and Gardner’s syndrome. Hyperdontia might also occur without presenting with an underlying disease.
Supernumerary teeth are divided according to location and shape into three categories.

Treatment for hyperdontia typically involves dental examination and diagnostic imaging, such as X-rays, to assess the location and position of the extra teeth. In many cases, the extra teeth may need to be extracted to prevent further dental complications. Depending on the severity, orthodontic treatment may also be necessary to align the teeth properly.
